David speaking with residents next to a busy A1 junction

I’ve seen recent posts about the A1 and I want to share my thoughts. The dualling scheme wasn’t suddenly scrapped in 2024 – it was effectively shelved by the previous Conservative government in 2022. That’s on the record.

We also need care and respect when talking about serious road accidents. These directly affect families and communities and should never be used for political point scoring.

I want to see the A1 dualled. I use the road regularly myself, as do my team, and I fully understand the frustrations and safety concerns. It’s also true that some serious accidents have happened on stretches that are already dualled. That’s why, alongside long term ambitions, immediate safety improvements at dangerous junctions matter, and I’m pleased we’ve recently secured funding to start this work.

What residents deserve is honesty about where things stand right now, and constructive cross party work to secure investment, not rehashing old arguments.

I welcome any of my constituents to contact me if you want to know more about what I am doing to make travel safer in North Northumberland.
