The Budget will ‘cut the cost of living’ for families
David Smith MP has welcomed the Chancellor’s budget, delivered today in Parliament
The MP for North Northumberland has welcomed a £150 cut in energy bills and other announcements in the 2025 Budget to help local families.
The Chancellor today shared a range of measures that will support North Northumberland families and small and medium enterprises (SMEs).
This includes cutting the average energy bill by £150 a year from April 2026, lifting the two-child benefit cap, and making under-25 apprenticeships fully funded.
David said: ‘This is a Budget that will cut the cost of living and ease the pressure on families. As a country we want to support those who need a little extra help.’
Lifting the two-child benefit cap could benefit 1150 North Northumberland children.
David said: ‘Child poverty in modern Britain is a disgrace. Children can’t choose their circumstances, and if we can help them, we will.’
The Chancellor also changed how SME apprenticeships will work, so that u25 apprenticeships for North Northumberland businesses will be fully funded.
One in eight young people is not in education, employment, or training (NEET) and this change will help young school leavers in North Northumberland enter the workplace.
Many of the changes will be funded by progressive taxation measures, including a mansion tax on properties worth over £2m. This will apply to just 1% of North Northumberland homes.
The Government has also clawed back £400m from Covid fraud – taxpayer money that was wasted in the pandemic.
David said: ‘This Budget is about making the everyday economy work for people. Too many people are struggling while others take shortcuts and get far ahead. We’re building a fairer Britain and a fairer North Northumberland, where everyone feels the benefits.’
‘Child poverty in modern Britain is a disgrace. Children can’t choose their circumstances, and if we can help them, we will.’
