David Smith MP has shown his support for yesterday’s news that u16s will be banned from social media, following Labour’s consultation.
North Northumberland MP Supports Social Media Ban
David Smith MP has welcomed the Labour Government’s announcement that it will introduce a ban on social media use for under 16s, expected to come into force from spring 2027.
The North Northumberland MP, who has been campaigning for stronger action on online safety, said the move reflects concerns consistently raised by constituents.
Welcoming the decision, David Smith MP said:
“Today’s announcement is an important step forward for children in North Northumberland and across the UK. This is something I’ve been lobbying hard for while listening closely to constituents, including young people themselves.
“Our young people are growing up in online spaces designed to be addictive, not safe, and we are seeing the consequences in rising anxiety, low mood and a loss of real‑world experiences. I’m pleased the Government is now stepping in to address these concerns and put children’s safety first.”

Local Engagement
Mr Smith has spent the past 18 months pushing for change, including raising the issue directly with ministers and signing a joint letter to the Prime Minister calling for urgent action to raise the minimum age for social media access to 16.
He has also led local engagement, including running a constituency‑wide consultation and discussing the issue with residents in surgeries as well as hosting a public meeting and speaking directly with students in local schools.
David added:
“The message from North Northumberland has been clear: we need to prioritise children’s safety. This is about putting responsibility where it belongs – on tech companies – and giving our children a healthier, happier and safer childhood.”
Under the Government’s proposals, major platforms such as TikTok, Instagram, Snapchat and Facebook will be required to prevent under 16s from accessing their services, with further protections for older teenagers.
