Armed Forces Parliamentary Scheme

In a few weeks my time on the Armed Forces Parliamentary Scheme will come to an end. I joined the AFPS because our nation faces many external threats and I wanted to see what it takes to keep our country safe.

Inspired by RAF Boulmer, I chose the RAF track of the scheme and have had the fantastic opportunity to visit stations and bases across the country – as well as take some high-flying rides!

But while I have seen duty and dedication everywhere I go, I’m also concerned that we have underfunded our armed forces for too long.

This Labour Government is increasing defence spending from 2% to 2.5% of GDP by 2027 – an extra ÂŁ13.4bn per year – and we need every penny of that increase to be spent on British industry, workers, and craft, especially in the North-East. We are increasing support for veterans and tackling poor quality military housing.

I’m proud to support our armed forces and to be the MP for an RAF base, and we must make sure we are always prepared to defend our freedoms.
